Fall is a lovely season crisp air, colorful leaves, cozy evenings. But along with the beauty come a few hidden dangers for pets. Let's talk about them so we can make sure our pets are safe this fall and keep you out of the Emergency Room.
First, antifreeze. Even a tiny amount can be dangerous. So check driveways for leaks, store containers securely, and seek vet care immediately if exposure is suspected. If you suspect that your pet got into antifreeze call ASPCA Animal Poison Control immediately. In parking lots keep your pet from drinking from puddles as we don't know if it's contaminated.
Second, Halloween candy. Chocolate, raisins, and sugar-free candies with xylitol are a no-go. Keep treats out of reach. The most common sugar free sweetener is Xylitol. This toxin can cause dangerously low blood sugar as it stimulates production of insulin and can be fatal to your pet without veterinary intervention. This is best treated at a Veterinary Emergency Facility.
Third, toxic plants and mushrooms. Avoid lilies entirely for cats, and keep decorative plants out of reach. Lillies can cause liver failure in cats. Even a small amount of pollen on their fur can be a toxic amount. Poison control should be contacted so your veterinarian can make an appropriate treatment plan for your pet.
Fourth, shorter days. Use reflective collars or leashes for evening walks. Hit by cars can be very traumatic for your pet and the pet owner. Let's take all precautions to make sure motorists see you and your pet.
Fifth, protect paws. Wipe and dry them after walks, and check between toes.
Sixth, bonfires and holiday gatherings. Keep pets safely distanced from fire pits and grills, and skip fatty table scraps.
With a few small precautions, fall can be a wonderful season with your pets. Remember to keep candies away from pets, fatty foods and keep an eye out for antifreeze.
